DIY

the project i chose to do for my DIY project is to decorate a lampshade. equipments and materials needed were just paint of my colour choice and paintbrushes. i found an old lampshade that i no longer use and decided to repaint and make a new design out of it. i liked the neutral look but wanted to make it darker and add white as its accent. i used a tanned colour as the base and painted the whole lampshade. i waited and let it dry out for a night before i did the next step then i decided to go with curves and swirls to make it flow and not sharp looking.  liked this DIY project because i like painting but don't find time to do it since i don't take any art classes. it's nice to be doing something i like once in awhile.

DIY Lamps, by berinder purewal

The DIY lamp I chose was this gallon lamp.I like the idea of reusing milk cartons as a lamp. They are environmentally friendly and look really unique. In my opinion they look kinda of cheap and ugly but I thought they were a really creative use of milk cartons.Im suprised they used plastic milk cartons because they could have easily melted. The strings they hang from make them look really bad I definately would not want these in my house.

Lamps are a important part of design because they can add alot to a room. They come in all different colours, sizes and shapes.Big lamps can be used a focus points in rooms to tie them together or little lamps can be used as accent pieces.Lamps serve a double purpose in rooms they help light and add decoration.

I love candles but mostly cause of there smell I always make my mom buy them for
me but not as decoration pieces just to light and cause of the smell, my favourites
are vanilla. But candle holders can give the room a really nice affect.I like this candle holder cause the black swirls makes it flow. This would be great detaling in a room and would tie it together.

I personally dont like these candle holders but I've never seen anything like them before. There really funky.I would never put these in my house but they do look unique. The candle holders in this picture are in the shape of people. The far right one looks like its playing the drums. It looks really playful and I think would work well in a artsy room.

These candle holders go on walls. I like the design using the black swirl detailing.
What makes these candle holders different is that they go on walls rather than being the center piece on tables. These I think would really add detail to walls in any room.

Today im writing about headboards.Headboards are used for decorations as much as for practical uses. They range from very simple to elaborate.Color and material are also important features in headboards. Modern or antique, headboards are a must in bedrooms.Headboards have many differnent benefits they can be used to hold storage if they have shelves or be center piece in design of your room.Headboards come ain a wide range of varieties so im going to show you some I like.
Wooden headboards give the room a rich look. They tend to last longer then a fabric covered ones. They come in dark or light finishes of solid harwoods like oak, maple and cherry.Lighter wooden headboards tend to brighten the room to set off features in other bedroom furniture as well.

Metal headboards are available in a wide selection of styles and costs.Metal headboards can be found in a wide variety of finishes to work well with just about any design scheme you have in your bedroom.Metal headboards are durable and easy to update when you want a change. There are lots of different metal finishes such as iron, aluminum, steel, bronze, gold, and silver but making sure it goes with your room is very important.
This was another cool metal headboard I found. Its in a weird kind of shape but the detailing really fits well with room.

Leather headboards are my favourites.Leather headboards are durable and sturdy because fabric can easily wear out and get stains while wood can get chipped. They are easy to maintain and keep clean just try and avoid scratches.Leather headboards give rooms a very sleek modern look.

Today im writing about curtains, blinds and roman shades.Curtains and blinds are very versitile and can be used in almost any room. With a wide vareity and style of them in the market they can really make a big difference in a room. They play an important role in completing the decor of a home and should be chosen wisely so that they go well with the setting and texture of the room. Curtains and blinds help to control the amount of light in a particular room. Also, there are lots styles and materials of curtains and blinds that you can decide from.Curtains and blinds are not just used in living rooms they can also be used in bedrooms and bathrooms aswell.

These curtains add a pop of colour to a neutral room which may otherwise look kind of boring and plain. This is why curtains are so versitile.Curtains work well with big windows and can give the room a elegant feel.

Blinds can add beauty and practicality to windows, they are the most popular choice for light control and privacy. These wooden blinds are great for light control and can't be bent or curved like other blinds. The color of these wooden blinds is beautiful and natural and does not over power the room. Also, they go with various color options that can harmonize with the interior space.

Roman shades,I love these!I think roman shades look so sophisticated and modern.Roman shades give rooms a very clean look and there classic lines are ideal for any style or look of a home. They make your room like neat and uncluttered.I really like how they are used in the picture above they go really well with the room and add to the beachish theme going on.

Vocabulary
Finial: the artistic figure used as a decoration at the end of curtains, flags or even buildings

Tie Back :a strip or loop of material, heavy braid, used for holding a curtain back to one side.

Curtain lining: curtains for showers?

Valence: Outter part of curtains above the curtains and rod.

Grommets: Rings used in the hole of fabrics for curtains so they dont rip.

vignette

so this is the vignette that i created.i wanted to choose a very soft and calm theme so i chose white as my base colour. at first i was going to do the vignette in my room but didn't like how it looked because my room is a mellow green. i used the hallway cupboard as my background because i really liked the effect of how the shutter looked and how it worked very well since it was a white creamed colour. i based my vignette around the lettering 'love' and my teddy bear because they mean a lot to me. i just happen to find all the other pieces and they really represent myself. first thing that came to mind that would go with this vignette were candles and i'm a big fan of candles so i had them in my room. i also used my little lamp that i had gotten from ikea. the box i got from a friend as a present along with jewelry. i really liked the turnout of this vignette overall because it really describes me and is simple.

free blog !

first thing i thought of were flowers. i think having flowers whether they are real or artificial really brings a room together. i love flowers and my mom always have fresh flowers around the house. they are simple and pretty looking which just completes a room.

i personally prefer real flowers but they cost more since you have to replace them when they die. with artificial flowers, they can last forever without changing them. you just have to clean them since they tend to become dirty. with buying just a few flowers real ones are more expensive which is why people usually only get them for a special occasion.

with flowers comes vases. it's true when people say it's the little things that matter. vases comes in many different shapes and sizes. they also vary from being plain and simple to colourful and busy. the flower choices and vase should also compliment each other. for example if i had just one kind of flower that were simple i would use a colourful vase. and in the opposite way if i had a variety of flowers and colours i would choose a simple vase as the base.

the last thing i would like to talk about are the filling and different things we can put in the bottom of the vase. t's only reasonable to put it in clear glass so that we can see it. like the above examples, we can add colours or make the vase multipurpose and add fishes. we can put almost anything in the bottom as long as it works from rocks and pebbles to petals or sand and seashells. the vase itself can be very detailed and creative !

window treatment

today's post is going to be about window treatments. this topic is going to help me in reality because we are moving soon and my mom wants me to find window treatments that would go with the house. personally curtains are my favourite. they can be long and sleek or big and filling. curtains are very elegant and would work well with big windows. also the curtains are made out of fabric so would soften the room and make it more welcoming.

roman shades are next. this is the first time i've seen this design and i really like it. unlike curtains and drapes, roman shades are more clean and doesn't clutter the room with the hanging extra fabric. i particularly liked how the roman shades are used in this design picture. roman shades are lighter because there is less fabric and it is more modern. i think it would be more ideal to use these in small windows. i think i just might get these for my new room !

& the last window treatment i chose to write about are the ordinary blinds. blinds are very common because it's cheaper and simple. i think overall these are the most useful and practical one although they don't look the best. they can be adjusted to any height and the blinds can open up or close blocking the sun out. they can be made out of slats of fabric, metal, plastic or wood. the most common ones i see are the white metal ones which i also have in my current room.

VOCABULARY:

  • finial: the artistic figure used as a decoration at the end of curtains, flags or even buildings.

  • tie back: the piece of fabric, hook, or any other material that hold the curtain back when it's drawn.

  • curtain liners: i am not sure if i'm correct but according to what i found, curtain liners are curtains but for showers.

  • valence: just like valence electrons in science, valance are the outter part of curtains. it is above the curtains and covers the rod. it adds more detail to the curtains.

  • grommets: the rings that are put into the hole of fabrics for curtains so that the curtains don't rip.
